he's expected to be in jail tomorrow while charles and camilla continue their tour of australia and new zealand. the woman who received threatening e-mails from now former cia director david petraeus' mistress is breaking her silence. the mistress, author paula broadwell, sent harassing e-mails to jill kelley. she's an unpaid social liaison at an air force base in tampa. kelley reportedly went to the fbi when she received those messages, and that sparked an investigation that uncovered the affair with broadwell. kelley released a statement last night that reads, "we and our family have been friends with general petraeus and his family for over five years. we respect his and his family's privacy and want the same for us and our three children." >> they insist petraeus had nothing to do with petraeus' testimony about the deadly attack on the embassy in

benghazi. the committee chair dianne feinstein ss petraeus may still be called to testify at a later date. parties are ready to negotiate to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. senior democrats and republicans say they're confident they can reach a deal on a spending plan by the end of the year to avoid billions of dollars in tax hikes and spending cuts. republicans have said they're willing to allow some tax hikes to end the budget stalemate. democrats say they're also willing to cut spending. >> we've had votes in the senate where we've actually gotten rid of tax credits. i think that's a given, and i think the vast majority of americans agree with that. >> i think, if the house stands for anything, it's caught government spending, as tom coburn said. i think we have to do more of it. we heard the mandate in 2010 where it was a clear mandate to cut spending, and we did. >> president obama will sit down this week with members of labor

and business communities to discuss his approach to avoiding the fiscal cliff. he'll meet with both parties in congress on monday. senior firefighters pulled a victim from the c&o canal around 11:00 last night. it's not clear how he fell into the canal. at last check he was listed in critical condition. d. firefighters trying to figure out what sparked flames at an apartment in northwest d.c. this was at the intersection of 14th and spring streets just before midnight. the crews arrived, the building was full of smoke. the fire started in the basement and was quickly put out. no one was hurt. montgomery county firefighters trying to figure out what sparked this fire in dickerson, maryland. firefighters posted these photos on twitter. that home on bealsville road was engulfed in flame. we're told it was a total loss. no one was hurt. inch lawyers for the imprisoned man in cuba have called for help. alan gross has spent more than

two years in jail. he's lost 100 pounds and developed other medical conditions. in a letter made public, a lawyer for gross says, if he continues to be denied proper medical care, his treatment will, quote, surely amount to torture. gross is serving a 15-year sentence for what cuba calls crimes against the state, charges gross denies. today the country observed veterans day, and we've got some information for those of you who would use public transportation today. metro opened just a few minutes ago. it will run on a saturday schedule, though. track work continues today on the orange, red, and green lines. that means no service at the ballston and virginia square stations, and there is no marc or vre service today. everything should be back to normal tomorrow morning. president obama honored those who bravely served our country, saying they always deserve our support. the president took part in a wreath laying ceremony at arlington national ceremony yesterday. after laying a breawreath at th tomb of the unknowns, he paused for a moment of silence. he says our support for the

breaking news out of israel. militants in the gaza strip launched ten rockets. a rocket hit a house, damaging that house and nearby cars overnight. no one was hurt.

meanwhile, the israeli air force carried out several raids in the gaza strip in response to palestinian rocket fire. more than 110 rockets hit israel on saturday. this violence could spark more hostility just a month before israel's elections. the country's leaders say the race won't keep them from trying to stop the rocket attacks. this marks exactly two weeks since hurricane sandy crashed ashore in the northeast. crews still working to restore power to 12000 homes and businesses in new york and new jersey. at least 4,000 displaced residents are still staying in shelters. fema has offered $450 million. governor cuomo plans to ask the federal government for $30 billion in disaster aid. the red cross says it's received $117 million in donations. they also say their response was been near flawless. some residents in hard hit areas disagree. they say the help has been

minimal, sporadic, and very hard to find. >> we haven't seen red cross at all. red cross hasn't offered any assistance up until yesterday. they take people's hard working money to assist people, and when push comes to shove, they don't assist. >> i think that we are near flawless so far in this operation. i'm just so proud of everything that we are doing on the ground. >> the red cross says sandy creates unique challenges. it's a cold weather hurricane, and it struck in a highly populateded area. they have already handed out 5 million meals and snacks to people in need. the veterans day parade not only honored those who served our country but collected donations for victims of hurricane sandy. the group collected winter coats for people in those devastated areas. this morning it is still not clear what caused this fiery explosion in indiana. take a look.

that powerful blast killed two people and injured several others late saturday night in indianapolis. investigators believe the explosion happened inside this home near that burned out car. the blast obliterated the house itself and the home next door. crews from everywhere came to that neighborhood to help the victims. >> they didn't know what they were walking into. they didn't know if they had the equipment for this. they didn't know what occurred. they just knew the citizens needed help, and they showed up. >> firefighters have evacuated nearly 200 people from that neighborhood. it damaged or destroyed nearly three dozen homes. investigators think some sort of gas leak caused that explosion. terrifying moments for people in a colorado movie theater, not far from the deadly shootings at a theater in aurora earlier this year. "the denver post" says a 17-year-old walked into a movie theater in boulder, colorado, last night wearing a clown mask and the makeup from the joker.

in last night's incident, police say the teen was unarmed and did not threaten anyone. several people ran out of the theater after seeing him and alerted security. a suburban detroit police officer is recovering this morning after a man opened fire at the police station. investigators say a 64-year-old man walked into police headquarters yesterday afternoon and shot an officer who was behind protective glass. officers ordered him to drop the gun, eventually shooting him and killing him. the injured officer is expected to make a full recovery. the incidence of autism may be higher in children whose mothers had the flu or a fever more than a week during pregnancy. in a danish study, they examined the files of 7,000 children born in denmark. mothers who had the flu for more than a week while pregnant had a greater risk of being diagnosed with autism before the age of 3. doctors say more studies are

needed to find a direct link. there's more cleanup to do after a strong earthquake over the weekend in myanmar. on saturday morning, a 6.8 magnitude quake rocked the country. the quake caused damage to buildings and bridges and even damaging ancient pagodas. as many as 12 people may be dead. some of the deaths may have happened when the earthquake caused a mine to collapse. heavy rain flooded venice, italy, putting 70% of that city under water. some areas are submerged by as much as five feet. flooding is common this time of year. this year is worse than most. this is the sixth highest level of floodwaters in 140 years. the city is building movable barriers that will protect it from high tides and floodwaters, but it woen't be operational fo another two years. >> convenient svenice is so low worry venice will be completely

found one growing favorite could be worse for you than you think. a new canadian study finds those breakfast sandwiches, many with egg, bacon, cheese, or sausage, could be hurting your heart. while many sandwiches only have about 450 calories, the study found the sandwiches slowed down your blood vessels and over time could increase your risk of heart attack and stroke. american universities are seeing a large increase in international students. international enrollment grew nearly 6% last year. that's largely in part because of a 23% bump from chinese students. overall, there were about 765,000 foreign students in american schools last year. the jump has helped these schools financially as the students paid $22.7 billion in tuition, fees, and living expenses last year. d.c. united fans are probably in a lousy mood today. the team lost their first leg of the eastern conference finals 3-1, and many of them say a

says it was like a lightning bolt. lawmakers say they are still stunned by david petraeus' resignation as head of the cia over an extramarital affair. this morning they're demanding more details from the fbi investigation that revealed that relationship. nbc's tracie potts is live on capitol hill with more. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: aaron, good morning. this morning we have new details and identification of the person who started that fbi investigation. multiple federal sources tell us it was jill kelley. she and her husband were very good friends, for five years, she says, with general petraeus and his wife. she told the fbi she was getting anonymous e-mails that raised concerns. they were in the process of investigating that when they also uncovered e-mails between general petraeus and who was later identified as paula broadwell, the woman with whom he says he was having an affair. she was embedded with him in afghanistan. it was a writer doing a biography on him. general petraeus not under

investigation, but this was uncovered in the process of investigating broadwell's e-mails, his mistresses e-mails, and also there are no criminal charges here for petraeus, even though he was head of the cia. apparently, he is not facing criminal charges from the fbi, but they are here on capitol hill wondering if he may testify about his own investigation into the deadly attacks in benghazi. >> there are videos and tapes and pictures and things that can be shown. so it's -- it is not going away. >> there were five attacks during the year. one prior attack on the consulate itself. the question i have is why wasn't something done about it? >> no comment from petraeus or broadwell since all of this broke. jill kelley, the woman who started the fbi investigation, says we respect him and his family's privacy, we want the same for us and our three

children. congress will also be focused on the looming fiscal cliff this week. leaders from both parties think they can reach an agreement on a spending plan by the end of the year. billions of dollars in tax hikes and spending cuts will take effect if no deal is reached by new year's eve. economists say that could send the unemployment rate soaring over 9% and plunge us into a deep recession. prince george's county police are trying to determine who shot and killed a 20-year-old man. police found edwin leola suffering from a gunshot wound in lewisdale yesterday morning. police are working to identify a motive in the case. this morning in howard county, police are looking for the man behind a shooting in a fast food restaurant. investigators say the manager at the at that goe bell on minstrel way in columbia was shot several times early yesterday morning. he is currently in critical condition. police say they're still working to determine a motive. today the head of the montgomery county school system

will share his vision of the county schools. joshua starr will deliver his state of the schools address today. he's calling it building the future together. starr has had a little more than a year to assess the school system. he's in the middle of his second year on the job in montgomery county. 55 degrees. hanging on for dear life. the people who came to the aid of this cat caught up on a pole.

welcome back at 5:45. a curious cat in dewey, maryland, came close to losing one of her nine lives after spending days on top of a utility pole. the cat named fierce disappeared on wednesday. yesterday they spotted her on top of the bge utility pole. that's when the cat's owner linda drew called firefighters to contact the power company to be safe. crews showed up last night with a cherry picker. trouble is that scared fierce that took off down the pole and into the bushes. drew said she's relieved the cat is down. >> i'm just glad she's down from there. i was pretty sick about her being missing. >> drew says she believes fierce will return home sometime today.

montgomery county firefighters are also trying to figure out what sparked this fire in dickerson. firefighters posted this photo on twitter. the home was engulfed in flames. we're told it was a total loss. no one was hurt. it was not a smooth ride for more than 160 passengers on board an amtrak train headed for union station last night. a csx train headed for d.c. derailed just out of richmond at 9:00. they had to stop train 66 at main street station and transfer passengers to buses. passengers arrived safely at union station by bus after 10:00 p.m. hundreds of janitors at walter reed medical center in bethesda looking for their paychecks. the service employees international union that represents the nearly 300 people say they haven't been paid in two weeks. the union says it's filed a complaint against federal contractor escap enterprises. the company claims they haven't been paid by the government. they have not commented on the

matter. montgomery county wants to convert some of the lanes on the county's busiest roads to buses only lanes. that's according to "the washington post." montgomery county transportation planners say the move is a faster and more affordable way to improve traffic congestion. the lanes would be on rockville pike, new hampshire avenue, route 29, georgia avenue. they will discuss the proposal next week and in february. gasoline prices expected to drop another 10 to 20 cents through the holiday. the lundberg survey found the average price for a gallon of unleaded dropped nearly 21 cents in two weeks. the average price of regular gas is 3.77 cents in the district. in maryland, $3.45 right now. and in virginia, it dropped to $3.27. in west virginia, it's $3.57. and the national average is $3.44. if you're traveling for thanksgiving and planning on flying out of here, you may want

to get to the airport with plenty of time to spare. a new report from travel site orbitz says reagan national is the ninth busiest airport. many people are expected to hit the skies even though prices are up from last year. a new device promises to let you sleep pretty much anywhere. take a look at this contraption. the aptly named upright sleeper is a modified neck brace that allows you to catch a nap while sitting straight up. it's aimed at travelers who are tired of inflatable pillows which really don't work that well. it's available on sky mall and will set you back about $40. >> seriously? >> is it uncomfortable? there's a lot of pressure on your neck and chin. >> it completely looks uncomfortable. >> it does. >> if you have a large head, like i do, and you're putting all that weight on your chest right there from resting it like that. >> you think it's going to snap? >> with my head, probably.

sky. might see a little sliver of a moon and venus this morning, especially much in virginia and maryland east. a lot of cloudiness from the shenandoah mountain. rain is now falling through much of ohio, indiana, into kentucky and tennessee. this area of rain ahead of a front. that's going to be moving our way probably into the metro area, but not until perhaps after sunset tonight and before midnight. out ahead of that, it is mild, into the 60s. much of west virginia, ohio, and into western pennsylvania, it's a bit chillier. these areas in blue under the clear sky. it's mostly in the 40s, most of virginia and maryland now. there's a little patchy fog too. probably around 7:00, 8:00 this morning, still be in the 40s most of the region then. then for your lunch hour warming up quickly, low to mid-60s and partly sunny. after that, going to be all cloudy rest of the afternoon as we reach the upper 60s. some of that rain moving in after sunset. then in the metro area, perhaps

relatives or friends didn't want to pay for it themselves. to keep your cost down, the site recommends you buy generic brands and keep your decorations simple. the turkey in the middle of the table is the only centerpiece you'll need. that is, if the turkey is good, of course, right? there may be a new challenge for travelers already dealing with fewer flights and more crowded airplanes. cnbc's shartia brantley is live with that story and more. shartia, good morning. >> good morning, eun. u.s. airlines are facing what could be the biggest pilot shortage in the past 50 years. the crunch is due to new federal rules taking effect next summer requiring all new pilots to have at least 1,500 hours of previous flying experience. now, that's about six times the current minimum. other rules will require airlines to give pilots more daily rest time. these regulations come as thousands of senior pilots will soon start hitting mandatory retirement at age 65. experts say the changes will force airlines to increase their pilot ranks by at least 5%.

an amazing voice. just great music by awesome professionals and a chance to say thank you to some veterans. >> a lot of patriotic music, i can imagine. i can hear god bless america there. >> and it's the fifth year they've done it with maryland public television. you can catch it tomorrow night at 8:00 on maryland public television. even here in the district, you can see that. >> i hope you had fun. >> i did. it was a great time. people around the country yesterday paused to remember and to thank our nation's veterans. >> and there were plenty of tributes around the country, but in north carolina, there's one that turned a lot of heads. ralph coleman built and displayed six life sized cutouts representing the branches of the u.s. military in his front yard. coleman himself served as a marine during the korean war. he said he hopes the homemade memorial sends a message of thanks to a veteran. >> i got a little sign out front i think says what i want to say. america land of the free because of the brave.

that's what i want people to do is start saying thank you. >> the display did not just grab civilians' attention, veterans also stopped by to pay their respects as well. what a wonderful tribute to the veterans. i hope you stop and thank a veteran today for their sacrifice and service. obviously, we're in washington, d.c., so there are lots of monuments and memorials around town to visit and just take a moment to really sort of absorb what so many have fought and died for so that we can live the lives that we lived freely. >> all right. it is now 5:57. ahead, why moms to be may want to put down those cell phones.
